KITCHEN APPLIANCES - Blenders

The fact is that unless a Blender is used constantly, they do not consume much electricity. Nevertheless, they do consume. Yes, there are solar and battery operated Blenders, but the electric Blender is found in virtually every house.

There is only ONE real energy saving step for Blenders. When shopping for a Blender you do not need to buy a model with higher wattage for more power and better results.

A Blender can range from 300 watts all the way up to 500 watts.

Watchdog in Action:
The 500 watt model will have a higher electric bill and according to studies done in reports for consumers, there will not be any better results. For example, the extra wattage providing more power doesn't chop ice any better or faster than a blender using 200 watts less. So don't buy a bill of goods!

So for people living in areas of America with the highest electric rates that use a 300 watt Blender for half an hour every day of a month will only cost: $ .84 (as per 2009)

A 500 watt Blender used in the same areas for the same amount of time will have a higher cost of: $ 1.40 (as per 2009)

Mixers

Watchdog in Action:
Much of the same holds true for Mixers. The food preparation results are the same between a Stand / Bowl Mixer and a Hand Held Mixer. However, the electric bill is LOWER with a Hand Held mixer for a few reasons:

1.) A Hand Held Mixer is going to use LESS watts than a Bowl Mixer.

2.) Also in many houses the Bowl Mixer is left out on the counter because it takes up too much space in a kitchen cabinet. When on the counter, some people start to use it more often, like scrambling two eggs in the morning. A large number of watts for a small job that could be done faster in a cereal bowl by hand with a fork.
(Especially when clean up time is calculated into the equation)

3.) The Hand Held Mixer gets put away in the cabinet and forgotten about, so eggs are scrambled in a cereal bowl by hand with a fork more often, whereas a Bowl Mixer is on the counter and wastefully used.

mixerHand Mixers produce the same results as Bowl Mixers mixing bowl
