KITCHEN APPLIANCES - Water Distiller
So you are using a Water Distiller, that is great!
Please keep using one, this is a WIN all around as summarized below. Please keep reading and scrolling down.
Now even though Water Distillers save money, energy, and Earth, they still use electricity.
So to help lower the electric bill when using Water Distillers we have a few suggestions:
 |
First, if you have yet to buy a Water Distiller, don't buy one with the digital display.
If you already did, then remember to pull the plug out when the Water Distiller turns off
or when not in use.
No reason to have the digital clock and display window running and using extra electricity.
(see blue arrow in photo on the left) |
Second, don't fear simple models.
They use less energy and produce a full gallon of water.
Models like the one above only make 3/4 of a gallon.

Third, when filling up the Distiller with water from the tap, only use hot water if you have a Separate Hot Water Heater, like the one shown in the photo on the left or a Separate Hot Water Storage tank. Since 30, 50, or 75 gallons of water has already been heated and stored, using this hot water will reduce the time the Water Distiller has to run. Less time spent heating and boiling the water inside the Distiller means less electricity used and lower costs.
With the information you may have read in regards to "Hot" water having more particulates than cold, yes that is true, but the Distiller is going to leave all those particulates at the bottom anyway.
Please see our water section for more details on the distilling process.

Watchdog in Action:
If your Hot Water is made by the same system that heats your house, usually with a 5 gallon coil inside the boiler to heat only 5 gallons of water, then DO NOT use Hot water from the tap. Use cold water only to fill the Distiller. It will be cheaper for the Distiller to boil the water compared to your boiler that is designed to heat a house. Save that 5 gallons of Hot water in the boiler's coil for your shower.
Please see our heating section for more details on separate Hot Water Heaters. |

Fourth, look into buying a Porcelain Bee Hive Jug that can hold up to 5 extra gallons of distilled water in your refrigerator or on a decorative stand.

Fifth, don't waste money buying the chemical sold to clean the bottom of Distillers. Just use organic white vinegar once a week to wash it out.
Let the vinegar sit inside the Distiller and soak for a few hours. This will help break up the buildup of sediments. |
A summary of reason to use a Water Distiller:
Health Reasons:
Watchdog in Action:
It has been reported that we should drink almost 200 gallons of water per year. That is almost 3,000 glasses of water and depending on the water you drink, you can put into your body almost 500 pounds of inorganic and organic matter during your lifetime. That is 500 pounds of waste that your body has to find ways of excreting. When young, the body can do an excellent job getting rid of this crap, but as we age, the results are never that good. Why put this stuff into your body in the first place? Think about the contaminants cumulating over the years and the possible negative burden on your life.
Distilled is the purest.

After two weeks, depending on your water supply, you can have this much "crap" build up at the bottom of the water distiller. Nobody wants to drink that. |
The photos above show the bottom of water distillers soiled with the contaminates left behind from the distillation process.
Just use organic white vinegar to clean once a week - see our water section for more details
Financially Reasons:
If you consumed about 10 gallons of water a week through purchased water in gallon jugs and water bottles you will have the following average expense:

Half the water is from one gallon jugs at $1.00 each for a total of $5.00 |
The other half is from water bottles at
$1.30 each for a total of $84.50
(based on 12 ounce bottle) |
Grand Total per week: $89.50
Grand Total per year: $4,654.00
Grand Total for Two years: $9,308.00

Now let us compare the cost to make and bottle your own Distilled Water:
 |
After your initial purchase cost for a water distiller: (starting around $120.00)
Base on the 2007 average Kilowatt rate in America, the electric bill for making one gallon of Distilled Water is:
Approximately 30 cents per gallon... |
Grand Total per week: $ 3.00
Grand Total per year: $ 156.00
Grand Total for Two years: $ 212.00
By drinking distilled water from you own reusable mug, container, thermos, or bottle,
you will be saving approximately:
$9,096.00 in two years!
Vacation anyone?

Even if you bought only gallon jugs of water and refilled your own reusable bottles
because it is less expensive, you still will be spending $520.00 per year.
Compared to making your own Distilled water costing only
$156.00 per year,
you will be saving yourself $364.00 in one year!
Weekend away anyone?
Earth Friendly Reasons:
Making you own Distilled water and using your own reusable container doesn't put plastic bottles into our environment!
