KITCHEN APPLIANCES - Clothes Dryer, page five

Things to know that SIGNIFICANTLY help when BUYING a clothes dryer:

energy efficient dryers

Here is a question that we do not have any studies or reports on:
What type of Door is best and more energy efficient on a Dryer,
Window or Solid?

As of now, we believe a SOLID DOOR with insulation will hold heat in better than a glass or plastic window door.

So Members are asking:
WHAT'S THE STORY TODAY
WITH MATCHING WASHERS & DRYERS
THAT HAVE WINDOW DOORS ON BOTH?

window dryer

Watchdog in Action: Many people feel that a WINDOW DOOR on a Dryer presents NO REASON other than the
American Consumer is being SOLD a BILL of GOODS.

WHY?

- If you want the MOST Energy Efficient Washer and Dryer the odds are that they will be from different manufacturers
and they WILL NOT MATCH.
- Some manufacturers are CUTTING CORNERS at our expense by using the same Washing Machine's FRAME design with a window for the Dryer.
- A window DOES HELP to see when your clothes have finished washing in the WASHING MACHINE.
- A window DOES NOT HELP with drying clothes in the DRYER.
- A window loses more heat than a SOLID insulated filled door. After all, you want to DRY clothes, not watch them.

We found among our members that the majority of males who are married thought a matching washer and dryer was the way to go. Yet, most of married women felt that washers and dryers are not a "Fashion Statement" nor does it matter if they don't match.
Washers and Dryers are in closets, mud rooms, or finished basements where nobody sees them except the people who do laundry
So they DO NOT have to MATCH.

NEXT:

gas dryers

Watchdog in Action:
Consider getting a Natural Gas Dryer...
because they can operate up to 75% more efficiently than an Electric Dryer.*

If an Electric Dryer cost $1.00 to dry clothes, it will only cost 25 cents to dry the same clothes in a Gas Dryer. That is a possible 75% savings. The range of savings is from 50% up to 75%!

* The main issue now is, Do you already have Natural Gas in the house or a Gas Line in the street. Either way the cost to "hook up" a Gas Dryer must stay within reason. If you already have a gas stove, gas heat or gas hot water heater in the house, then a master license plumber is needed to run a gas line and properly vent the gas dryer for a fair price. The cost difference between operating a Gas Dryer vs an Electric Dryer will offer a fast justifying payback.

If you don't have gas in the house, but it is in the neighborhood, do not let the utility company charge you for hooking your house up to the gas line. Tell them if the connection isn't free, then no business for them along with no future sales for maybe a gas stove, gas hot water heater, gas heat, and other neighbors switching.

What, No Energy Star Label?

Watchdog in Action:
The DOE (Department of Energy) will review the decision made by the Energy Star program NOT to label Dryers with Energy Stars and Yellow Energy Guides.

While there is little difference in operating costs for Dryers, this does not justify the decision not to do Energy Star Labels. The reason is because there are definite difference between Dryer Models due to many various Features* offered and not offered. Features such as Moisture Sensor vs Temperature Sensor. EHW believes that this over-sight has been costly to us, the consumers and our Earth's environment. We hope the DOE steps in and corrects this issue before 2010. Okay, lets try by 2011.

Comparing Electric Dryers to Electric Dryers is like comparing Golden Delicious Apples to Golden Delicious Apples. Nevertheless, Gas Dryer comparisons must also be made. You see, a Gas Dryer would not be a Golden Delicious Apple, it would be a Macintosh Apple. NEVERTHELESS, it is still in the Apple family of Dryers! The comparisons must be made.

Watchdog in Action:
* FEATURES:
Here are the differences as marked with (*) above and don't let a salesperson tell you otherwise... For example, the newest B. S. Sales Line used by some is:
"The energy savings for dryers are with the washing machine you buy and how good the spin cycle is."

- Buy a Dryer with a Moisture Sensor inside the drum of the Dryer that will automatically shut off the Dryer when the job is done.

- A Temperature Sensor is not as good as the Moisture Sensor.

- Any sensor in the back of the Dryer where the exhaust air exits, is not as good as a Moisture Sensor inside the Dryer's drum.

- Buy a Dryer with Cycles that have "Cool Down" included. As the clothes finish drying they tumble through cool air instead of hot air.
