KITCHEN APPLIANCES - Clothes Washer, page four
Safety Facts for clothes washer:

Water damage from leaks, broken hoses, and broken Washing machines can add up to big repair bills. There isn't much that you can do if something like a water leak occurs when you are not home, but sometimes having a portable Water Alarm can prove useful.
A Water Alarm has two sensors at the bottom and operates off a 9 volt battery. Once water touches the sensors the alarm will go off, so if someone is home major damage can be avoided. |
Another way to avoid Water damage is by having your plumber install FloodSafe hoses instead of rubber hoses. The gray arrow in the picture on the right points to the standard black rubber hoses. The stronger FloodSafe hoses are shown inside the package on top of the Washing machine.
