First thing to know when buying a new Dishwasher is to look at models with the Energy Star Label. However, just because a Dishwasher has the Energy Star label that DOES NOT automatically mean you are buying the most energy efficient model made.
The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the US Department of Energy (DOE) set minimum guidelines that have to be meet in order to have the Energy Star label. To know just how energy efficient the appliance is, you have to look at the YELLOW EnergyGuide label, like the one shown on the right.
Watchdog in Action:
Upon close examination, this YELLOW EnergyGuide label on the right shows that the appliance has received the Energy Star label, but it is not even close to being the MOST Energy Efficient model made.
Look at the BLACK BAR across the YELLOW EnergyGuide on the right.
On the Left side you see the most efficient model made uses the least energy noted at 194 Kilowatt hours per year. (This is based on average normal use)
On the Right side you see the amount of energy used by the model using the most energy, noted at 531.
The appliance model for this YELLOW EnergyGuide is shown to be almost in the middle of the BAR, a little closer to the more efficient, noted at 308.
This means if you buy this model you will be using 37% MORE energy compared to the MOST efficient model made.
Keep Shopping! Look at other manufacturer models, until you find that model at 194 Kilowatt hours per year!
Why?
Because the more energy you save, the lower your energy bills and you will be doing the most to reduce pollution, promote cleaner air and prevent contributing to global warming.

Second thing to know when buying a new Dishwasher is that you
DO NOT have to pay big bucks to get a Dishwasher that cleans the best!
Don't think that the more expensive dishwasher clean better. In fact, when it comes to getting dishes really clean, dishwasher for $500.00 do the same cleaning job as a $1,200.00 dishwasher.
