Award winning design for the MOST energy efficient refrigerator goes to...

most efficient appliance
NOBODY

The most energy efficient design for a refrigerator is not being made.
In fact the opposite seems to be popular today.
Everyone is pushing to sell the French Doors on top and the Freezer at the bottom.

From eating up too much electricity.

- Not funny, buy true.

Watchdog in Action:
In the 1990s more efficient designs that used basic physics were coming out and the operation cost for refrigerators was dropping. By using the well know fact that cold air drops, the design with the freezer on the top allowed any excess cold air made in the freezer to drop through an Air Balance vent into the refrigerator below.

See blue circle on image.

Thus, reducing the running time of the refrigerator in order to maintain temperature.
Also since the
HOT motor is at the bottom, it was nowhere near the COLD freezer at the top...
Thus, avoiding a WAR between a Hot motor and a Cold freezer.

COMMON SENSE STUFF, RIGHT?

So is there a good reason as to why models with the freezer at the bottom are being sold today
or are we just being sold a Bill-Of-Goods for fashion sake?

Having two doors to open for the refrigerator section does save some energy because you only open half of the refrigerator to get one item out. Thus, you don't lose all the inside cold air that would escape if both doors were opened. However, this doesn't off set the energy savings received from a refrigerator with the freezer on the top.
