KITCHEN APPLIANCES - Trash Compactor and Garbage Disposal in sink
Sit down with someone who was a kid during
World War II ...
Perhaps your parents, grandparents, great grandparents, or a neighbor.
Ask them how did taking out the garbage work back then.
Now you know a short answer is not what you will hear, a story will be told and that is why we said at the start, sit down.
The story will go something like this...
"Grandma, did you have to take out the garbage when you were little?"
"Ooh my yes. Things were not easy, first the big depression and then the war. We were a big family with all my brothers and sisters, but we survived through the hard times and into the good times. We all took turns taking the garbage out, we all did our part. Those times reinforced the facts of life such as everyone doing their share, you took responsibility for your actions, and common sense prevailed."
"Did you recycle?"
"Ooh my yes. Hardly anything was thrown away. I went with my brothers to get the deposits on glass bottles. We found and collected rags to... You should read the book A Tree Grows In Brooklyn and you will learn about the term 'rag picker'. We collected and recycled many things especially for the war effort. We even composted food scrapes for the garden. It was a small garden, not much space in Brooklyn, but we sold..."
Within those stories are the answers to how we all should
manage our own "taking out the garbage" today.
