Learn about Energy Saving Step Number One:

SSE test Steady State of Efficiency Test for Heating Units using Oil.
This is a Watchdog in Action web page:

Yes, there is a test to learn how efficient
a heating system is working!

It is called a Steady State of Efficiency test or SSE for short. One must be performed every year in order to know and keep your heating unit's efficiency steady. Keeping your heating system running as efficient as possible is accomplished by making various adjustments based on the results from the test.
Your Heating Unit MUST be on and running during the whole test.

How much does it cost to have this yearly SSE test done?

If you have a Service Contract with your fuel supplier, such as an oil company, there should be no fee for doing this test. However, having an outside consultant or company do a SSE test, can have a cost as high as $300.00.

How can I tell if a SSE test is being done on my heating system?

Does the Boiler's Stack have an Access hole, as shown
in the photo below?

An Access hole is needed to conduct a SSE test and should be covered
with a special High Temperature resistant METAL tape.

The Access hole should be no more than 6 inches
away from the Boiler, and should have special
High Temperature Metal tape covering it.

This special tape supplied by your oil company is the only way to cover the Access hole. Do Not use a bolt, screw, or any other kind of tape over the Access hole. The bolt and screw will decay away from the high heat and using anything else is a
Fire Hazard!

DIRT: The Filthy Enemy. SSE Test (Steady State Efficiency Test) will determine how dirty your Heating Units is and how much extra money
that is costing you as you waste energy.
You want a ZERO "0" Smoke or Dirt level.

If the test results show a Smoke or Dirt Level of 3 or Higher,
then the test is null and void. Everything must be cleaned out and vacuumed before the test can be done again. Usually this means opening the boiler for cleaning. Also the base of the chimney should be professionally checked and cleaned out if necessary.

By using the Access hole heated air is pulled
out from the Boiler and through Filter paper to see the Dirt level of the operating unit.
