July 1, 2009: SPACEPORT AMERICA to use Earth's subterranean temperatures to warm and cool facility.
They recently broke ground at the location for Virgin Galactic's Spaceport America in southern New Mexico.
No, this isn't a story being retold from New York's 1964 World's Fair. This is future space travel for people, as per Virgin Galactic's vision.
This is not a space ship, look again - this is Virgin Galactic's complex called Spaceport America!
The facility's design is to meet LEED standards for the entire 110,000 square-foot hangar. One way this will be done is by using Earth Tubes, aka Ground-Coupled heat exchangers. This system uses the Earth's subterranean temperatures to warm or cool the air inside any building.
The plan is to have this system precondition the air in order to save up to 70% on air condition costs. Spaceport America, the world’s first purpose-built commercial spaceport for Virgin Galactic, will employ cutting-edge green building technology. Extensive use of sustainable and clean energy technologies throughout the design will ensure that the facility sets the benchmark for similar structures in the future.
