Watchdog in Action: There are no short cuts to Saving Water and Energy. There are many steps and details that have to be implemented so savings can add up significantly. There is no one magic step to save big!
SECOND: Are we looking into and using Low Flow / Aerator Faucets and Shower Heads?
How many Corporate America companies are using these Faucets?
Are these Faucets also with infrared sensors?
Infrared-sensor faucets like the one below, automatically activate the water to come on
when hands are detected and automatically shut off the water when the hands are gone.

What about us at home? What can we do?
And please Do Not tell me the old 1970s or 1980s conservation tip that had us putting
Water Restrictive Discs in the faucets!

No way, not on this web site...
When people first started using restrictive devices to reduce water use, we saw that it was a sacrifice -
Because volume was lost. There had to be a better way and there is:
 |
At home you can easily retro-fit your faucets with Aerators that cost less than ten dollars.
They just screw on and will go from about 5 gallons per minute to 2.5 gallons per minute.

We all heard the water saving tips:
Turn off the water while brushing your teeth
Turn off the water while shaving*
* The best way to save the most water when shaving is to pull up the sink's Stopper and put just enough water to cover the head of your razor, (about 1/2 of an inch high directly over the Stopper). Then rinse your razor off by moving back and forth rapidly in the little water.
Overall, far less water is used.
This is NOT to be done with a toothbrush! |

Watchdog in Action:
Most people are not a fan of turning the water on and off
while brushing their teeth or washing their face.
So what is the best way to save water?
A) Make sure your faucet has an Aerator that is using only 2.5 gallons of water per minute.
B) The best way for washing your hands, face and brushing your teeth is to use a Foot Pedal Control that allows homeowners to activate the faucet by stepping on a Pedal. You can turn on and turn off the water while keeping your hands free to soap up, brush your teeth or clean your face!
Cost has to be consider for installing, but for a family of four or more, this proves to be a saver. Especially when you are saving water AND on the cost to make Hot water.
The photo on the right shows the Foot Control at the bottom of a bathroom sink. |

SHOWERS:
- Most old showerheads can use up to 7 gallons of water per minute.
(About 35 gallons per 5 to 7 minute shower)
- More
recently made showerheads will use up to 3 gallons of water per minute.
(About 15 gallons per 5 to 7 minute shower)
- The newest water saving showerheads will only use 1.75 gallons of water per minute!
(About 5 gallons per 5 to 7 minute shower)
Watchdog in Action:
So if you switch from an old showerhead that is using 5 to 7 gallons per minute to the most efficient showerhead made today that uses about 1.75 gallons per minute and you take
about 5 to 7 minutes to shower, you and you alone, will SAVE between
10,000 to 13,400 gallons of fresh water per year!!!
The most asked Question is:
Will I lose volume and quality from the newest low
1.75 gallons per minute showerheads?
The answer is not really! No, really. The designs incorporate a narrower spray that has a larger amount of air mixed into the water. The end result is no noticeable difference.
There are also other ways to save: One way is to buy a new showerhead that regulates the water flow by reducing or even shutting off the water with a control button on the showerhead itself. Thus allowing no water to be used while you "soap up" or "shampoo up" your hair.
Another way is to SING in the shower a 5 minute long song and when the song is done, so is your shower! |
